Is the IMDb App Free or Paid? Everything You Need to Know

Whether you are looking up the name of that actor on the tip of your tongue, checking out user reviews before buying movie tickets, or building an exhaustive watchlist for the weekend, IMDb (Internet Movie Database) is the ultimate go-to destination for entertainment lovers.

However, with so many mobile apps charging subscription fees, introducing in-app purchases, or locking features behind paywalls, a common question arises: Is the IMDb app free, or do you have to pay to use it?

The short answer is: The standard IMDb app is entirely free. However, there is a catch depending on whether you are a casual moviegoer or an industry professional. Let’s break down how the IMDb ecosystem works, what you get for free, and what costs money.

1. The Standard IMDb App: 100% Free

For the vast majority of users, the IMDb app available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store is completely free to download and use.

When you download the standard IMDb app, you get unlimited access to a massive treasure trove of entertainment data without ever having to enter your credit card information. Free features include:

• Comprehensive Database Access: Look up millions of movies, TV shows, episodes, and video games.
• Cast and Crew Biographies: Check filmographies, trivia, birthdates, and fun facts about your favorite actors and directors.
• Ratings and Reviews: Read professional reviews, user critiques, and parental guides, or submit your own ratings.
• Trailers and Clips: Watch the latest theatrical trailers, teaser clips, and exclusive interviews.
• Watchlists: Keep track of what you want to watch next by saving titles to a personalized digital watchlist.
• Local Showtimes: Check theater listings and purchase movie tickets directly through the app (where available).

How does it stay free? The standard IMDb app is supported by digital advertisements. While you will occasionally see banner ads or video ads while browsing, they do not block you from accessing core database content.

2. The Exception: What is IMDbPro and Does It Cost Money?

While the main IMDb app is free, IMDb also operates a separate, specialized companion service called IMDbPro.

IMDbPro is specifically designed for actors, filmmakers, casting directors, writers, and other entertainment industry professionals. IMDbPro is a paid subscription service.
