From Rwanda to the Global Stage: The Inspiring Journey of Bella Murekatete
The path from a childhood playing football and volleyball in Rwanda to the pinnacle of collegiate and international basketball is extraordinary. Widely recognized in international basketball under her given name Bella Murekatete (frequently referenced as Benita or Bella Murekatete), this 6-foot-4-inch center has steadily carved out a pioneering legacy. As the first Rwandan-born player in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history, Murekatete’s journey is a testament to resilience, immense talent, and the power of breaking geographic barriers.
A Life-Changing Leap Across Continents
Murekatete grew up in Rwanda, where her early athletic interests leaned toward soccer and volleyball. However, her towering height and natural athletic coordination eventually drew her toward basketball. Recognizing a rare window of opportunity to pursue the sport at a high competitive level, a bold decision was made: at just 14 years old, she moved thousands of miles away from home to Post Falls, Idaho, arriving on an F-1 visa to attend Genesis Prep Academy.
Adapting to a new country, culture, and language as a teenager is no small feat. Yet, Murekatete channeled her energy onto the hardwood. Earning a reputation as a dominant defensive presence and a three-time first-team all-state selection, she proved that she belonged on the American basketball radar, setting the stage for a historic collegiate career.
Making History at Washington State
In 2018, Murekatete signed a National Letter of Intent with Washington State University (WSU), officially stepping into the NCAA Division I spotlight. Over her impressive tenure with the Cougars (2019–2024), she became a anchor in the paint.
Her growth culminated during the 2021–2022 season, where her stellar improvements on both ends of the floor earned her the prestigious Pac-12 Conference co-Most Improved Player of the Year award, averaging strong numbers in points, rebounds, and blocks. Standing tall in the competitive Pac-12, she shattered ceilings for East African basketball players aspiring to play at the highest levels of collegiate sports.
Representing Rwanda on the World Stage
Beyond her success in the United States, Murekatete has remained deeply committed to her home country, proudly representing the Rwanda national team.
She made her debut with the senior national team during continental qualifiers, quickly becoming a centerpiece for Rwandan basketball’s international ambitions. Her leadership and paint presence shone brightly during major global competitions, including the FIBA Women’s World Cup pre-qualifiers, where her stellar performances earned her a spot on the tournament’s all-star or all-tournament team.
Continuing the Ascent
After graduating from Washington State University, Murekatete’s professional career has taken her across professional leagues—including opportunities in the WNBA ecosystem with the Phoenix Mercury and stints in European competition like France’s LFB.
Whether she is battling for rebounds under the basket or inspiring a new generation of young athletes across East Africa who dream of following in her footsteps, Bella Murekatete remains a true trailblazer of modern basketball.
