Does PSY Still Make Music? The Man Behind “Gangnam Style” Today
More than a decade after “Gangnam Style” took over the internet and made history as the first YouTube video to hit one billion views, people still find themselves asking: Does PSY still make music?
The short answer is a resounding yes. While he may no longer dominate Western mainstream pop charts on a weekly basis, PSY remains a powerhouse in the South Korean music industry. He is actively writing, producing, mentoring the next generation of stars, and—most importantly—still putting on some of the biggest live shows on the planet.
From Global Phenomenon to Label Boss
Following his meteoric global rise in 2012, PSY continued to release major hits under YG Entertainment, including “Gentleman” (2013), “Hangover” (with Snoop Dogg in 2014), “Daddy” (2015), and the fan-favorite “New Face” (2017).
However, in 2019, PSY decided to pivot. He parted ways with YG Entertainment and founded his own entertainment agency and label, P NATION. As a CEO and executive producer, PSY shifted a significant portion of his energy toward scouting and developing talent. Under his leadership, P NATION has housed and launched prominent K-pop soloists and groups like Crush, Hwasa, Heize, and various idol groups.
The Return of the Showman: Psy 9th and “That That”
Even with his heavy administrative responsibilities as a label CEO, PSY never truly hung up his microphone. In April 2022, he made a triumphant return to music with his ninth full-length studio album, aptly titled Psy 9th.
The album proved that his signature eccentric energy hadn’t faded one bit. Its lead single, “That That,” was co-written, produced, and featured Suga of BTS. The collaboration was a massive cross-generational event in K-pop, blending PSY’s high-octane theatricality with Suga’s sleek production style. The music video became an instant viral hit, racking up hundreds of millions of views and proving that PSY could still capture lightning in a bottle.
