How to Add Your Own Songs to Spotify: The Complete Guide

We’ve all been there: you are curating the ultimate playlist, only to realize that a rare remix, an unreleased demo, a local band’s track, or an old-school MP3 isn’t available anywhere on Spotify.

Fortunately, Spotify has a built-in feature called Local Files that bridges this gap. It allows you to seamlessly blend your personal music collection right into your Spotify library alongside millions of streaming tracks.

Whether you want to spin your custom tracks on your desktop or sync them to your phone for offline listening on the go, this step-by-step guide will show you how to make it happen.

Step 1: Prep Your Audio Files

Before diving into Spotify settings, make sure your audio files are ready to go. Spotify is particular about file formats.

  • Supported Formats: MP3, MP4 (with audio), and M4P (though standard M4A files without video protection generally work well on desktop too).
  • Pro Tip: Make sure your files are properly tagged with metadata (Song Title, Artist, Album, and Artwork) using an ID3 tag editor. If they aren’t labeled, finding them in a sea of unknown tracks can become a headache.

Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop

Because managing files requires a physical storage directory, you must set this up on a computer (Windows or Mac) first, even if your ultimate goal is listening on your phone.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app.
  2. Click on your Profile Picture in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
  4. Toggle the switch for Show Local Files to On (it will turn green).
  5. Under the Show songs from section, Spotify will automatically select common folders like Downloads and Music Library. If your songs are stored elsewhere, click Add a source to select the specific folder on your computer.
  6. Navigate to Your Library on the left-hand sidebar, and you will see a new folder titled Local Files. All your imported tracks will live here.

Step 3: Add Your Songs to a Playlist

To play these tracks easily—and more importantly, to sync them to your phone—you need to group them into a playlist.

  1. Inside your Local Files folder on Spotify, find the songs you just added.
  2. Click the three dots (…) next to a song, select Add to playlist, and either create a New playlist or drop them into an existing one.
  3. Give your playlist a recognizable name (
